Take a look at the hiking maps by Shobunsha ( #30 covers Izu at 1:80,000. There are many campsites near the water in the area you mentioned. I believe the contact info for those campsites is in the little booklet included with the map, provided you can read the Japanese therein.

Those maps are available at many bookstores and most outdoor stores.

Having assembled the boat a couple hundred times by now, the moves eventually make it successfully into ones muscle memory...

Dear chrstjrn,

Thanks for your reply. Considering you don't live here anymore, you are pretty knowledgeable about details like this :-)

I do know those maps, as I often use them for climbing. They do indeed have the phone numbers of campsites, so this could be an idea.

I am heading up north in a couple of hours. I will do Matsushima, and another island a bit further up north called onmaewanizushima. Very excited!

Take care,

Just noticed you have a GR 520--how do you like it? Do you use the stirrup pedals or have you made some modification to the steering system? Sorry for the off-topic questions...

Hello Paul,

I do like my Nautiraid. The boot feels indestructible. Problem is that it is too heavy to carry alone, especially loaded so I can't use if for multi-day trips. That was one reason why I got the fujita. The other was assembly time...
As for the foot stirrups, I hate them. once you remove your feet, you'll never find them again if you have the skirt on. Haven't modified them yet, but I am going to. Mark Balogh used to have a boat just like that, and he attached rudder pedals. I'm going to do the same, I just ordered the wrong pedals, so it's still in process. What do you think of your boat?
