What length of Greenland style paddle for Aerius II

Post by Ldhoughton »

What length of Greenland style paddle would people recommend for a 5' 10" lighweight paddler of an Aerius II?
Is there is anyone in Victoria BC with one I could try for length?

FWIW, I never liked a GP in the A2 as te boat is a bit wide but did like single bladed Aleut Paddles.

Northwest Sportee (SuperBoat)

Did you raise your seat level to use the single paddles in the A2?

I have made two greenland style paddles for my Aerius II. I am 6'2" and use both one cut to length as your supposed to do (fingers over the tip of the blade), which was around 84" I think, and one that is a good 94" long. The shorter one has a bit wider blade as the 2x4 I cut it from was rough cut, and a little wider than the finished 2x4 I used on the longer paddle. I have no problem using either of them in the Aerius II. If your making your own, make it long and if it bothers you just trim it down later.

My seat is raised a bit. I use a Long Haul comfort seat on my sailing deck - in rough terms I'd say that raises my comfort seat about 2 inches from the standard AII deck (think 1/4" platform on top of the AII ribs). I'll measure it when the rain stops. I use my 240 GP with this set up and it seems a good length. Actually, it's probably the best fit I have for this paddle which seems a little long anywhere else. There's no appreciable stability issue with the added height that I've noticed. I can stand on it when still - but it is much easier to stand when sailing.

I'd like to get a shorter GP for the Ute. I'm thinking around 215???
