gloves would be nice; however, shorts I personally find more useful. Not a requirement, of course, G-string will do; in a cinch, one glove, strategically placed, might work as well.

I would add to your list:
- spare paddle (I prefer to carry a 72" wood Greenland storm paddle)
- spray skirt
- bilge pump
- sun hat
- Goretex paddling jacket
- water bottle
- small skein (10' to 20') of nylon rope
- sunglasses
- clip on white safety light (required in my state after dark)
- gloves

The Watertribe website has a lot of great safety information.

http://www.watertribe.com/

I seem to remember seeing recommendations for small safety kits as well as expedition versions.

Of course you'll always want to add shorts!

Seems the 2011 Challenge has just begun 4.5 hours ago. I'd like to try this someday.

A knife comes in handy when you have to cut yourself out of a bind... like when you got yer "G" all in a tangle.

This BladeTech U.L.U. saved my butt on Sunday.

Right on, Slidegear

About 20+ years ago on a nube kayaking trip, one of the the folks capsized. He had numerous gadgets in his kayak, all fastened on nylon cords. When we tried to get him back in the kayak the cords were wrapped around him and we could barely keep his head above water. Nobody had a knife, but a young lady came to the rescue with a Leatherman tool and freed him. Unfortunately some of his gadgets were lost, but his life was saved. Since then I always carry a Leatherman and a knife.

You all should be sporting an FKO thong!

If you all paddle up Alaska's Southeast you may also want to be sporting one of these

What is essential depends very much on where you're kayaking, in what conditions, and for how long. However: I would never set out without:

PFD
Spare paddle
Rescue float
Pump for bailing

In Canada now of course the Coast Guard dictates minimum safety gear as

paddle
bailing device
pfd (properly sized)
sound signalling device (whistle)
15m/ 50 ft floating rope

and if in reduced visibility, a light

If I'm paddling anywhere the water is more than a few feet deep, I always have:

PFDs with attached whistle
bailing bucket and pump
Rescue float

That's the minimum.
