Sometimes, often, if you get enough wind to go faster than you can paddle with a downwind sail you will encounter increasingly large following seas. If there is enough wind to drive you and there is any fetch at all then you will soon be wondering if you are going to submarine or pitch pole. Hearing that breaking wave bearing down on you from some unseen point astern is thrilling. It's also a good reason to slow the boat down and practice your low brace off the crests. Better to slow down a little so as to not partially uncover your rudder potentially leading to a broach as your stern is lifted and your bow digs in to the after face of the wave ahead of you. Maybe better to be on the beach watching it all go by. It can get nervy. You are making the miles but still....
