where to? any ideas for 8 weeks dec/jan?

Post by mukluk »

...hi, interested in your ideas, places you've loved or places you'd love to go. I need a long trip to clear my head out a bit :-) Six or eight weeks would be great, so would like a bit of room to explore.
I have a khats and a pur35 desalinator. Have done a bit of a stretch down the sea of cortez and i liked it. Lots of wind days, though.
I'd prefer a relatively remote / wilderness sort of trip. Probably need some sort of village every week to ten days to pick up food. Need to work on my fishing.
Paddling conditions for intermediate, starting to creep towards advanced paddler. Don't really want to land a loaded boat in surf solo every night.
I'd like to be able to stealth camp / informal camp along the way. I don't mind meeting locals to ask permission or pay a bit, but don't want to deal with a lot of government and permitting.
Slight preference for cold water and ocean, but that's just what i'm used to...muddy rivers with reptiles and bugs would push the comfort zone, but maybe?? I might be able to round up a used drysuit. Half thinking about argentina.
Oh, it would be nice if it was relatively politically stable and not in the middle of a scary drug war. Bonus points if the airfare from vancouver doesn't impoverish me.
Thanks so much for sharing ideas and experience...cheers, m.

Thank you! Brilliant, love it. Looks gorgeous. I was hoping for some ideas like that one. Completely off my radar. I am enjoying a bit of a wikipedia tour of the area today. Some fairly serious-looking crossings. Iriomote looks especially good, I could indulge my inner biologist.

Would some discrete, low-impact beach camping be culturally acceptable?
What sort of wind and sea conditions would I expect mid-winter?

Vancouver to Taiwan to Ishigaki isn't out of reach expensive.
If anything it all looks a bit too safe, but i suppose that's not a bad thing  There is the scary poisonous shellfish.

It's too bad about that big gap in the chain between Miyakojima and Okinawa.

Tonga looks interesting as well...

Ishigaki, has only 1 campground. In winter should no be a problem to camp out. On Hatoma, I was asked not to camp but there are minchukus ( inns) and its only 2 miles from Iriomote

What sort of wind and sea conditions would I expect mid-winter? Strong northerlies. Sea gets real big between Hateruma and Iriomote
otherwise can be sheltered. The west part of Iriomote can get rocking. Rainy
Its relatively inexpensive and you won't need the desalinator

Hi m!
The Patagonian´s rivers in Argentina are a wonderfull choice for Dec/Jan according with yours expectations. The Rio Negro from the Andes to the Atlantic ocean, crossing all the Patagonia is a excellent adventure. There are others places to paddle, like the Parana River or the Uruguay. No drugs warriors or guns crossing the skies....
