Two questions about the BSD ama inflation.

You want to inflate until a thack with the finger makes kind of a ring correct? I haven't gotten there yet. Is there any chance of these things exploding? hahaha.

Have any of you guys successfully inflated and rigged your BSD outrigger system out on the water? If so, any tips?

I can rig and ship (?) the sail, but the one time I tried rigging the outrigger system on the water I couldn't get the tubes aligned. I probably inflated the amas by mouth.

I’ve been told I cannot over inflate them with my particular hand pump, but leaving a properly inflated ama in the sun can cause damaging expansion. I can’t imagine my lungs were ever strong enough to properly inflate the amas.

Just for nautical geek trivia: A mast is shipped and unshipped, when removed from its mast step or tabernacle, but sails are bent on then raised or hauled aloft depending on the sail.

I'm guessing my hand pump is probably in the same category. So I'll push the envelope.

Ditto for my lungs. Although I have to say that the one or two times I tried the amas (lung inflated), they seemed to work fine.

Thanks for the nautical lingo. Love that stuff.

I was stubbornly resistant to the idea of pumping the BSD amas...being overly cautious of bursting them. I am now a convert. Pump them up tight enough to ring when you flick them with your finger. Dowse them with water (if the water is colder than the air) and then pump them up again. Your boat will sail so much better when the amas are rigid. Then, yes, back off the pressure as soon as you land or whenever the amas are out of the water for any length of time.
Best,
g

Wow, thanks Greg, good description. Sounds like a hell of a lot of pressure in there. Sounds like you travel with the pump?

I've got three sails in with the Klepper S4 main in the last few days. I can rig and break it down on the water. I guess I should pull out the BSD next and try out those outriggers again.

I'm going to have a really hard time (mentally) pumping them up that much.

Yep, a pump is necessary, you (or, at least, I) can not get the air pressure you need without a pump. That said, it is really not that much...I believe the correct pressure is in the 2 lb psi range.
Glad to hear you got the sails up! If you make it to Cupsuptic I know there are several of us who are interested in how the Klepper sails handle.

Best,
g

Still hoping, but not pushing it, if you know what I mean.

Which do you carry along in the boat, the smaller hand pump or the larger foot-held one?

I'm kind of pleasantly surprised with the Klepper sail on the MK1. Still need to experience stronger blows with it but I suspect it's a little more forgiving than the BSD 36 Sport, but probably not as efficient.

I should measure the sail area. Stand by.

Well, I'm getting 29.2 Sq. Ft. for the main and 15 sq.ft. for the jib.

Rounding the main up a little would give us 45 total for the set. Funny, I always thought the S4 rig was 55 square feet total.

Here are the numbers:

Main: Luff 10' (120 inches), Foot 5'10" (60 inches), Leech 11' (132 inches).

Jib: Luff 80 inches, Foot 54 inches

I just did the basic triangle formula for area.

I always thought the S4 main was compatible with the 36 BSD, I guess I was wrong. Did I do this correct?

Klepper literature says the sail (S2) is a little under 5 meters.

hmmmm.
