skin is 3 kg
frames 1,2,6,7: spruce-ply 8mm
stringers: spruce
dollboard: ply cut out
all wooden parts grinded down to raw wood and painted with thin epoxid from west system
now the t9 is more flexible then before. but not soft.
sometime i have the feeling of a baidarka. that at 4.5 m length


nikola will use different wood/bamboo, Laminat. maybe sanwich frames. it is a running project.


why: we like the T9. we believe that the T9 is one of the best folderdesign.
good for ww, sea and pleasure

What did you make your skin out of to get it down to 3kg?

Pretty good looking boat. Looks like a real working boat... I like that. What are you going to put on the mast? I have found the T9 to be extremely tippy under sail... be interested to hear what you're doing here.

light fabric and keelstripes only where wooden parts and not over the full length.
light deck with "wiener naht"

this kind of skin was developed over years here in vienna.

@tippy: yes, but it doesn't matter. I sailed more then 35 years racing skiffs.
i only use at the T9 a sail downwind and deep reaching.

this spi is selfstabilizing. the hint is the whole *g* where windpressure can leave
the mast is very flexible. in gusts he is bending(pvc-tube)
years ago I used this sail with a rc-sailboat

i tested also a windpaddle - i sold it *g*

a pacific or a crabclaw(better/best? solution) asks for an ama

I used a similar setup on my T9 for sailing. It is the Harmony sponson kit.

The second strap from the bow is for the sail rig, not part of the sponson set.

Mark at Long Haul made me some D rings to permanently mount on the outer hull to connect this system, haven't had the nerve to glue them on yet. The strap system works pretty well and isn't permanent. But, what a great system for adding a little stability to this craft for sailing or getting back in when she's totally swamped. The sponsons can be inflated/deflated from the cockpit. The only problem with the strap system is that it loosens a bit after inflating and deflating.

a good idea. to inflate it sitting inside is a good idea. maybe i install this kind of inflating.

can you use the hamonysponsons also as boat-rolls for the beach?

@3rd pic: does the pic show the deflated sponson in a tube? does this tube have a velco?


which sailingequipment do you use?

The sponsons work great for any type of stabilization. So although I've never done it I presume it could be very helpful in beach landings. I've also heard that landing in reverse is a great tactic to remain upright.

Yes, the third pictures shows the deflated and sheathed sponsons. There is no velcro, but a black sleeve of light nylon (I'm guessing) that is pulled up over the deflated sponsons when they are not being used. This sleeve makes them very small and streamlined when you don't need to flotation/stabilization.

The tubes are held in place with adjustable straps and buckles that ride fore and aft of the cockpit.

I have three sails; Kayaksailor 1.6, Klepper S2 rig, and a 36HP BSD rig.

I have only used the Kayaksailor on the T9 as the boat would capsize too quickly with anything bigger. Even with the little KS I find it necessary to use the sponsons unless I want to go swimming.

I have used the Hobie Sidekicks on the T9 and they do work quite well for sailing. Unfortunately they get in the way for paddling and the T9 is just too tippy (for me) to set the outrigger up and take it down while out on the water.

I mounted the cross tube for the outrigger at the rear of the cockpit as you see in my photos. This is a good position as it doesn't block paddling too much. It is very difficult to reach around behind the seat though to disconnect the tubes and take the outrigger apart or set it up. The boat is just too tippy.

If you put the Sidekick cross tube at the front of the cockpit it really gets in the way of paddling.

The Sidekick's did work great for sailing in pretty strong wind on an open bay with my 1.6 Kayaksailor. Unfortunately I didn't have the same conditions when I tried the Harmony sponsons with the same sail rig. It was a very mild day and although the sponsons worked great, and seemed like they would work great in a stronger wind, I didn't actually get to try them in rough conditions.

If I were going to take my T9 on a serious journey I would use the Harmony sponsons system and attach permanent D-rings on the outer hull as connection points. This would allow you to keep the system tight and therefore more effective when you really needed the extra support.

Whichever system you decide to go with please practice using it several times. I've swamped my T9 and had horrific trials trying to get back into it. Without some sort of support system the boat will roll like a log, especially when swamped. In poor conditions this could be very dangerous. I was once able to right and get back into my swamped T9 without the sponsons or outriggers but it was impossible to do anything other than try and keep it balanced... and that was on flat water.

There are a few other T9 users on the forum here. They may have had different experiences... hopefully they will chime in.
