416 without rudder

Post by bobnautiraid »

I have a 416 and the rudder system is somewhat difficult/uncomfortable to use. Great kayak though and want to do camping in it. have an older "packer" but even set up for solo it's really large. Does anyone have experience using this kayak without the rudder system. Seems to track well but that's on local lake, not river

A friend new to kayaking brought one to a group paddle some years ago and asked me to check it out, complaining it didn't track. I had a lot of experience in an Aerius 1, which I paddled without a rudder, and thought it handled similarly. I wouldn't put a rudder on it unless I was paddling in very windy conditions, or sailing.

Mine doesn't have a rudder fitted and I never thought I needed one if that helps
