Raid 14 First Impressions

Post by tsunamichuck »

Picked up a used Nautiraid 14 in great shape today. Price too good to pass up. It is a sub 14 ft kayak. Got out for a short calm water paddle today. Really like the kayak. Lively feel. Stable. Solid frame. Very comfortable seat. The deck is not slippery when wet making it a comfortable ride for Paris The Parson Russell Terrier. Thankfully the kayak seems to track and turn very well without a rudder.

The rudder system is atrocious. The pedals are wood with a velcro attachment. They flat out do not work The rudder blade drags even when retracted.

The rear deck/seat is a too high to lay back on for rolling. The cockpit rim may be a bit small for some. I find it just right.

I purchased it assembled. I need to outfit some foot braces and maybe thigh and knee pads.

It has limitted potential as a guest boat because there are no adjustable foot pegs, but it will make a good travel kayak for Paris and me

Good stuff Chuck, I always admired Nautiraids and now I can paddle vicariously through your description and pics.

That said, I think it is time for someone to create a test to determine "how do you know if you have a kayak problem?". Just sayin'. We're not talking about an Imelda Marcos shoe problem here, but I think you may be flirting with a problem that is beyond your control.

Thanks for sharing!

@%&$ right I have a kayak problem... Not enough of them... I am putting my Java up for sale. It is a bit too limited as a double..

Anyway I haphazardly cut some foam block to test out as a footbrace. It works great. Will test on the water tomorrow.

Great looking kayak Chuck. I've always admired Nautiraids for the way the skin fits the frame. Whether it's old or new the hull appears to have no wrinkles or sags. Looks like Paris approves!

I don't need another kayak (sorry) but if I came across a Nautiraid and the price was right I'd have a hard time turning it down.

That sounds like the voice of someone who's learnt the hard way about the need to shake the bow and stern vigorously to get a Nautiraid wooden frame out of its skin :D

Outfitting works great. Really like this kayak. Paris digs it too.

Trying to understand what model you've got there. Is that the Nautiraid 416 with a wooden frame?

Nautiraid 14 with a wooden frame. It is a bit wider and longer than the 416

That will be soon. Have it drying out. Going to pick up some varnish and work on the frame.

Got a Nautiraid 416 from some years. Nice boat, seaworthy, after some essais easy to assemble.
I love it.

Actually not so bad. Need to do some small repairs and some maintenance but this will be a frequently used kayak
