Hello All!

If I wanted to splice a longer inflation tube to an extra sponson I own, which is best:

-- Just aquaseal

-- "E6000" cement mixed with MEK

I have the latter on hand from IK repairs, and was told that it gives a really, really firm seal. Any thoughts?

Also, I am taking a tube from an old float bag to do the splice. It looks just like the tube and nozzle on Feathercraft sponsons. Sound good?

Thanks very much for any info you can offer! :)

I would stick with an MEK based solvent glue for vinyl patching. My understanding is that Aquaseal is just a topical sealant whereas solvent glue forms a true adhesive bond between the patch and base material. I would not trust Aquaseal on something that has to hold under pressure.

The book "Building the Greenland Kayak" has directions for making your own vinyl flotation bags -- same process as sponsons. I have a copy somewhere -- if I can find it I'll see what they recommend.

If your air tubes are made with a PU coating, you can use Aquaseal, but the long cure time makes it less than convenient. We like Clifton Adhesive LA4123 because it is easy to use, and it bonds on contact. The bond is pretty strong immediately, and it strengthens further over a 24 hour period. We ship it in all our kayak repair kits. This adhesive is somewhat hard to find, but it is sold by NRS. Of course, we sell it too.
